Types of Dentures

Full Denture

A full denture, also called a complete denture, is a dental prosthetic that is inserted into the mouth. Its primary function is to replace natural teeth, but it also helps support the lips and cheeks. In many cases, any remaining natural teeth will need to be extracted before the denture can be manufactured and fitted, although dentures can be modified to fit over dental implants.

Conventional

A conventional denture is manufactured and installed after all the teeth have been extracted and the underlying tissue has been allowed to heal completely.

Immediate

An immediate denture is manufactured and installed at the same time as the natural teeth are extracted. The underlying tissue is allowed to heal with the denture already installed.

A full denture will consist of an upper and lower denture. The upper denture usually has a flesh-colored acrylic that covers the roof of the mouth, while a lower denture is horseshoe-shaped to make room for the tongue.

Partial Denture

Partial dentures are removable appliances designed to replace one or more missing teeth. They are manufactured out of metal, acrylic, or a combination of both and are customized to the needs of each patient, thereby restoring clarity of speech and chewing functionality.

While partial dentures made of metal are generally preferred due to increased strength and durability, your prosthodontist will work with you to determine the best materials and fit for your needs.

Care of Dentures

Dentures are dental appliances made of materials that will naturally wear down and may need to be replaced or adjusted to maintain proper jaw alignment. Therefore, regular dental examinations are crucial for denture wearers to ensure oral tissues are healthy and to detect any signs of disease or abnormal changes.

Here are some general guidelines for caring for full and partial dentures:

  • Daily cleaning — Dentures should be cleaned on a daily basis to remove food particles and plaque. Brush them gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush using a non-abrasive denture cleaner — not regular toothpaste. Also, rinse the dentures after every meal.
  • Soak overnight — To keep dentures from drying out and retaining their shape, it is crucial to remove them overnight and soak them in a denture cleansing soaking solution or water.
  • Regular check-ups — Schedule regular dental check-ups, as professional cleaning of dentures is necessary for maintaining oral health and the longevity of the dentures.
  • Handle with care — Always handle dentures over a soft towel or basin filled with water to avoid damaging them in case they accidentally fall.
  • Maintain oral hygiene — Even if you’ve lost all your natural teeth, it’s important to still take care of your gums. Brush your gums, tongue, and roof of your mouth every day before wearing the dentures.
  • Avoid hot water — Never use hot water to clean dentures, as it may warp them. Always use warm or cold water instead.

Maintaining regular contact with your general dentist and prosthodontist for regular check-ups and replacement or realignment of dentures is essential.
